This paper briefly reviews the literature on personality and the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality and its psychometric instrument, the revised NEO personality inventory (NEOPI- R), and the NEO Professional Development Report (NEO PDR) software which is used to process the personality inventory. It presents three illustrative examples of the results of a number of case studies that involved personality inventories (using the NEO-PI-R) and interviews of dairy farmers in Queensland, Australia, whose managerial skills are under considerable pressure following the deregulation of the Australian dairy industry in July 2000. Similarities and differences in decision making processes, and risk management (two components of managerial competence) and attitudes to, and attainment of, education of a very successful farmer, a less successful farmer and a farmer who has left the industry as a result of deregulation are highlighted. This information has been correlated with their personality inventories, notions of the farmers’ confidence, and demographic data.

These findings offer researchers, policy makers, extension officers, educators, farmers, commodity buyers and marketers an insight into the relationships between personality and these two components of managerial competence. Knowledge of the personality traits of effective managers may be useful in job or task specification on farms or, alternatively, in deciding to outsource farm management functions.
