This paper describes the effect of ICT on strategic power relations in the agri-food sector. It identifies three necessary determinants of strategic power – dependency, control and resistance – and investigates how ICT tools can create opportunities for inter-organisational collaboration and alter the nature of these variables. We assess three different interorganisational relationships – an electronic flower auction in Canada, a Dutch retail chain, and the Ivory Coast pineapple chain – and show how strategic power relationships in the agri-food sector are altered by the adoption and installation of an ICT infrastructure. The paper ends with a discussion of a typology of inter-organisational relations, the nature of strategic power and how they relate to the three cases we chose to investigate.
