While organizations enter strategic alliances for a variety of reasons, in the biotechnology industry strategic alliances frequently means the difference between survival and bankruptcy. This paper examines the role of strategic alliances in Canadian biotechnology firms looking at the motivations for alliances and the role they play in biotechnology firms. This paper reports results from an ongoing analysis, which includes analyses of biotechnology databases and examines four alliances in detail, with surveys and interviews of both partners in each of the four alliances.
