Value networks consist of numerous relationships between actors. Industry organisation literature suggests it is possible to recommend an ideal relationship design based on transaction, product, operating environment, and market/non-market characteristics. Actors each make their own interpretation of this ideal design and the underlying factors. The combination of each actor’s interpretation and the presence of any necessary antecedents such as trust and compatibility will determine the design of the relationship actually implemented. A model illustrating the antecedents of actual relationship designs is presented. It is suggested that the difference in design between the implemented and ideal relationship results in suboptimal performance in that relationship and the entire value network.
