This review of the economic impact of foot-and-mouth disease underlines the vulnerability of both the rural and urban economies to a large scale supply chain shock. While the effects on farm businesses are shown to be severe, farmers have been in receipt of compensation. The paradox of foot-and-mouth is its effect on third party businesses. The inter-relationships between supply chains are demonstrated by a review of the financial consequences of the disease on eight vulnerable sectors.
