Several supply chain members, as agribusiness organizations, have contributed to air and soil pollution, soil salinization and acidification, loss of biodiversity, and other serious environmental problems. The environmental behavior of each organization acting in a supply chain affects the entire chain. The objective of this paper is threefold: first, to describe the internalization of the environmental variable in a context of environmental management; second, to identify the main factors that influence the environmental behavior of the organization; and, finally, based on the organizational practices and its public statements, to define the environmental behavior of the organization. The research was a case study conducted in the Netherlands, a country that has an enormous legal and institutional apparatus geared toward environmental preservation. For our specific case, the results showed that the internalization of the environmental variable into an organization’s management began after the implementation of the Dutch National Environmental Policy Plan (NEPP). We found that strong national legislation, financial health of the organization and the social aspect were the factors that influenced the environmental behavior, and consequently internalization of the environmental variable. The organization demonstrated reactive behavior regarding environmental responsibility because it first pollutes, then pays the fees and after that adopts technology that is capable of repairing the damage, instead of adopting prevention technologies in the beginning. Finally, in comparing speech versus practice with regard to behavior affecting the environment, the organization can be defined as a responsible-follower.
