This paper discusses the selection of a supplier in a context of business networks. Recurrent transactions compose an ongoing relationship that is embedded in business networks with a social structure, which influences the advantages of the supplier-buyer relationship and supplier selection. In order to support the discussion, a theoretical framework is built on concepts such as relationship-specific investments, trust and prices. We illustrate the framework through three exploratory case studies of merchant-distributors of the flower supply chain. For these cases, we found that not only are prices of importance to the relationship, but also trust and specific investments. In addition, we elaborate on three types of networks and discuss their role in the selection of suppliers. Our conclusion addresses some managerial implications of the supplier-buyer relationship and the supplier selection, and also includes suggested topics for further research.
