Antimicrobial resistance including multidrug resistance contributes to effects on human health of Salmonella and may compromise the efficacy of available treatment options. The problem may be complex especially in cases of bad hygiene at rendering animal to human consumption and mishandling of food at home. Also there is uncontrolled sale and use of antimicrobials in feeds agriculture and for treating patient. In Brazil, S. enteritidis (SE) and S. typhimurium (STM) are the most prevalent serovars isolated from food to human consumption. In 2003, their prevalences were 1781/2987 among the total Salmonella strains isolated and serotyped for antigens. From these, 286 were selected for surveillance of antimicrobial resistance by disk diffusion test and phage typing performed by the standard scheme. Percentages of resistance were 69% in SE and 68.5% in STM, which a total of multiresistance of 53.8%. No resistance to third generation cephalosporin or ciprofloxacin was identified. Phage typing differentiated SE into 12 phage types, of which PT4 was most common (72.1%). In STM, 20 phage types were characterized, the most common identified being PT19 and PT193. These results show a high prevalence of Salmonella serovars circulating among humans and indicate a high level of contamination of foods especially those of animal origin and demonstrate that SE and STM infections are polyclonal. Furthermore, antimicrobial resistance is increasing and steps are needed to prevent further resistance from occurring and to minimize the potential transfer to humans.
