A new, fully validated, liquid chromatography (LC) method is described for the fast and sensitive determination of sulphamethazine residues in swine tissues (muscle, liver, fat and kidney). This was an acidic extraction method, which used a Nucleosil 100-5 C18, 5-μm stationary phase and a mobile phase of acetonitrile and 10mM phosphoric acid (16:84, v/v). The detection was performed by a UV-VIS detector set at 271nm. Overall mean recoveries were better than 78.20% and overall precision, expressed as relative standard deviation, was better than 13.14%, in all tissues examined. The limit of quantification was 50 μg/ kg for sulphamethazine in all tissues examined. The method was successfully applied to determine residues in tissues of two piglets orally administered a premix containing 100g of sulphamethazine per kg of product.
