This paper focuses on some features of the epidemiology of salmonellosis in pigs that are critical for the scientific validity of a pre-harvest monitoring and surveillance program. The frequency of disease may be estimated by microbiological and serological tests. Their strengths and limitations are discussed and methods to evaluate their diagnostic accuracy are presented. Pooled pen faecal samples should be collected on the farm whereas blood or meat juice samples may be collected on the farm or in the slaughterhouse. The methodology for estimating sampling intensity and sample sizes is presented. The on farm intervention strategies are complex and variable since there are two intersecting groups of factors influencing the complex on-farm epidemiology of salmonellosis; the first group includes hygiene and biosecurity factors and the second comprises those influencing the “microclimate” of the pig’s gastro-intestinal tract. The relative impact of these factors on the spread of disease should be continuously quantified.
