A prospective study has been conducted to evaluate virulence and clonal diversity in 319 V. parahaemolyticus strains from human source (29), environment (97) and seafood (193) isolated from 1992 to 2004 in different geographic areas of Brazil. The isolates were identified as Vibrio parahaemolyticus according to B.A.M. (FDA, 2001), as well as by urease production in Christensen’s urea agar supplemented with different NaCl concentrations (0,5%, 1%, 2% and 3%). To characterize the serotype prevalence, the method described in FDA manual (2004) was followed. The prevalent serogroups identified were O1, O10, O3, O11, O8 and O5. The hemolysin production has been observed in 17,2% from human, 2% from food and 1% from environmental sources. Recent increases in the incidence of Vibrio infection (especially outbreaks due to Vibrio parahaemolyticus) should allow a better understanding of the virulence mechanisms, clonal diversity and implications for the prevention and control in the tropical areas. Comparative analysis among environmental, clinical and seafood strains might be helpful for elucidating the potential risk in Brazil.
