Mycotoxin contamination of food and feed has been intensively studied for several decades, whereas a possible respiratory uptake of mycotoxins has received less attention. Mycotoxins have been found in samples of settled dust, but mycotoxins detected in air samples are not common. Aflatoxins have been detected in dust samples collected from the grain and feed industry. Trichothecenes and ochratoxins have been found in dust samples collected from ventilation systems. Low deoxynivalenol levels have been reported in air samples collected with a high volume sampler during grain milling. A number of veterinary publications and a few case reports on human disease indicate that Stachybotrys fungi may have a role in causing diseases in animals and humans. Experimental studies on animals have shown that inhalation exposure of trichothecenes or toxin containing Stachybotrys spores cause general symptoms or haemorrhages in the lungs and they may also affect the onset of lung inflammation. Mouldy agricultural or industrial work environments may constitute a health hazard to persons working in these. Indoor studies on health effects of occupants still lack data on the identity and concentrations of mycotoxins found in the indoor air samples. Mycotoxins have been detected in crude building materials from water damaged houses. Indoor air samples representative of long term human mycotoxin exposure are needed.
