This paper is intended to inform policymakers of the impact of excessively strict mycotoxin standards on food export markets. Using an integrated assessment model, it identifies the nations that would be most heavily affected by tighter mycotoxin regulations, estimates costs as a function of regulatory stringency, and addresses risk-risk tradeoffs between health benefits and economic losses from compliance with those regulations. Worldwide, the United States, China, and Argentina would suffer the greatest market losses from strict fumonisin and aflatoxin standards. As a portion of their total export market, sub-Saharan African exporters of peanuts would also suffer significant losses. Global adoption of a total fumonisin standard of 0.5 mg/kg and a total aflatoxin standard of 4 μg/kg would result in increased export losses on the order of several hundred million US dollars. Stricter standards are unlikely to improve health significantly, and may inadvertently result in health risks within exporting nations.
