In the U.S. research needs closely follow those of the regulatory agencies. Research provides the information and the technology to be able to produce and deliver food crops and products, which have levels of mycotoxins consistent with the public health. To provide the information necessary for both regulatory agencies and for producers, mycotoxin research priorities are primarily preharvest to provide for crop production free of toxic fungal contamination. These priorities include genomics of the causative fungi both descriptive and functional; fungal physiology and ecological relationships of the fungus and the toxin, both within the crop and in the greater environment surrounding the crop; technology to breed resistant crops; competitive exclusion technologies; agronomic practices; and mechanism of action of the toxin in animals. Appropriate sampling and detection methodologies for the regulatory agencies and producing industries encompass both preharvest and postharvest sectors.
