Abstract

Over the course of 1906 and 1907, William Seymour developed a particular understanding of baptism in the Spirit that fused together temple and bridal imagery around ecstatic tongues. Drawing on his Wesleyan theological heritage, Seymour argued that Christ was the pattern both in terms of bridal union and altar consecration and that the Spirit was the presence and power as the glory descending into the temple and turning the person into the habitation of God. Tongues became the spontaneous ecstatic sign that demarcated bridal union and temple indwelling while love fueled both the initial and ongoing assurance of the event. Seymourâs theological development of baptism in the Spirit reoriented mission to encompass the establishment of the kingdom through the new community of disciples as a place where men and women of all ethnicities could worship, serve, and govern together.
