Abstract

This essay is a personal and theological account of the development of Amos Yong’s theological method during his most creatively formative years as a Ph.D. student at Boston University in the late 1990s. Since then, Yong’s theological method has matured and become articulated in terms of his Pentecostal theological tradition as “the pneumatological imagination,” but at its inception it was born of his attempt to reconcile his encounter with the challenge of religious pluralism and his commitments to his evangelical theological heritage by drawing upon the thought of Charles Sanders Peirce, founder of the American Pragmatist philosophical school. I refer to the nascent stage of Yong’s theological method as “Boston Evangelicalism” and discuss its alignment with a kenotic, incarnation-centric Christology, fidelity to the Great Commission, and utility for global evangelism in a post-colonial context.
