Abstract

Although English translations render Lukeâs Greek terms lepra and lepros âleprosyâ and âleper,â respectively, they refer to a wider range of skin diseases than our modern use of the term âleprosyâ (applied to Hansenâs disease). Using ancient medical literature, this essay explores the range of meaning potentially relevant for Lukeâs terms. Using other sources, it also examines the social implications for a lepros in Judea and possible construals among Lukeâs audience.
