Abstract

This chapter explores how Yong’s quest for the Spirit in the religions can be understood as the needed assist for bridging the impasse between ATRS (African traditional religions) and African Christian theology. That is, the bifurcation that is the natural result of examining the ATRS from the christological orientation alone is mitigated by the pneumatological approach Yong suggests, which allows a place for the value of traditional African religiosity in the theological discussion. Here, Yong’s theological premises are considered alongside the ideas of Nigerian theologian E. Bolaji Idowu. The discussion closes with a model that describes a pneumatological soteriology for understanding the Spirit in West Africa.
