Abstract

Perennial questions over Christian identity gain complexity in the third millennium, where a universal gospel is claimed across an irreducible plurality. This calls for a definition that can host different cultural-religious grammars without subordination. Drawing from the work of Amos Yong, this essay sketches an outline for a plural Christian identity resistant to the solipsistic instinct of normative predication while maintaining the space for theological norms. Yong’s methodology provides ontological and normative shape, and suggests a “semiotics of reconciliation” that interrogates our theological norms by their eschatological utility, resulting in an appropriately wide definition for Christian identity that invites a mosaic of theological expression.
