Rabelais (Festin), production du Nouveau ThÃ©Ã¢tre ExpÃ©rimental jouÃ©e Ã lâEspace Libre de MontrÃ©al en 2005, propose une relecture originale de lâensemble des livres rabelaisiensâ: Pantagruel, Gargantua, le Tiers livre, le Quart livre â et mÃªme le Cinquiesme livre, avec le motif de la Dive Bouteille. Le texte, qualifiÃ© de Â« matÃ©riau mallÃ©able Â» sur le programme du spectacle, est considÃ©rablement remaniÃ© puisque sur les dix-huit personnages mis en scÃ¨ne â incarnÃ©s par cinq comÃ©diens et une comÃ©dienne â, onze voient leur rÃ´le sensiblement modifiÃ© et sept sont totalement nouveaux. Câest notamment le cas du personnage principal, QuÃ©bÃ©cua, qui se substitue Ã Gargantua dans le rÃ´le du fils princier de Grandgousier et de Gargamelle. Ã travers un prologue, trois actes et un Ã©pilogue, on suit la formation du gÃ©ant, depuis sa naissance jusquâÃ lâÃ¢ge adulte. Cette transposition de grande ampleur a dâabord pour objectif de rendre lâÅuvre de Rabelais plus accessible au public du XXI^e siÃ¨cle, en insÃ©rant de trÃ¨s nombreuses rÃ©fÃ©rences Ã lâactualitÃ© littÃ©raire, artistique, journalistique ou encore politique. Le texte comme la mise en scÃ¨ne (dÃ©cor, costumes, jeu des comÃ©diens, musique) se plaisent ainsi Ã mÃ©langer les marqueurs culturels de la Renaissance et ceux de la rÃ©alitÃ© contemporaine â et notamment quÃ©bÃ©coise, Ã lâimage de la Â« proutine Â» qui nourrit le bÃ©bÃ© QuÃ©bÃ©cua. Mais il sâagit aussi, dans la continuitÃ© de la thÃ¨se dâAntonine Maillet sur lâhÃ©ritage rabelaisien de lâAcadie, dâassocier lâhistoire et la culture quÃ©bÃ©coises Ã la France humaniste du XVI^e siÃ¨cle. Dans le dernier acte, QuÃ©bÃ©cua part dâailleurs pour le Nouveau Monde en compagnie de Jacques Cartier et il se lie dâamitiÃ© avec un autochtone sâexprimant en joual. Plus que jamais, Rabelais apparaÃ®t comme un Ã©crivain Â« quÃ©bÃ©cois Â», comme un lointain ancÃªtre capable de jeter un pont linguistique et culturel entre les deux rives de lâAtlantique.

Abstract

Rabelais (Festin), a production by the Nouveau ThÃ©Ã¢tre ExpÃ©rimental performed at Espace libre de MontrÃ©al in 2005, offers an original rereading of all Rabelaisâ works â Pantagruel, Gargantua, the Tiers livre, the Quart livre, even the Cinquiesme livre â using the motif of the âDive Bottle.â The text, characterized as âmalleable materialâ on the showâs program, is extensively reworked: regarding the eighteen characters on stage, played by five actors and one actress, the role of eleven is substantially modified and that of seven completely new. This is especially true for the main character, QuÃ©bÃ©cua, who replaces Gargantua as the princely son of Grandgousier and Gargamelle. The giantâs education from his birth to adulthood is traced through a prologue, three acts and an epilogue. The primary aim of this major transposition is to make Rabelaisâ work more accessible to a twenty-first century audience through the insertion of numerous literary, artistic, journalistic, and even political references. Both the text and staging (set, costumes, acting, music) mix the cultural markers of the Renaissance with those of the modern â and notably quÃ©bÃ©cois â world, one example being the âproutineâ fed to the baby QuÃ©bÃ©cua. Continuing Antonine Mailletâs thesis on the Rabelaisian heritage of Acadie, however, the issue is also to associate Quebec history and culture with the humanist culture of sixteenth-century France. In the last act, moreover, QuÃ©bÃ©cua accompanies Jacques Cartier to the New World, where he befriends an Amerindian who expresses himself in joual. More than ever, Rabelais has the appearance of a QuÃ©becois writer, a distant ancestor capable of building a linguistic and cultural bridge between the two shores of the Atlantic.
