Summary

To study the distribution of Paraleptastacus species along a gradient of changing physical factors, an extensive sampling program was carried out on five sandy beaches of the North Sea Island Sylt. The exposure of these beaches decreases from north to south; this results in a decreasing median grain size and an increasing amount of detritus along the gradient. As the exposure decreases, the extent of the beach slope decreases and the sand flats are gradually replaced by mud flats.

Although the number of Paraleptastacus species is lower in the more sheltered beaches, their dominance increases with decreasing exposure from 40% to 90% of the total copepods. Species occurring in the more exposed beaches are Paraleptastacus holsaticus and P. supralitoralis. Paraleptastacus spinicauda was found only in one beach of intermediate exposure. A fourth, up to now undescribed, Paraleptastacus species dominated the more sheltered beaches.
