Summary

A detailed study of all the organ systems in Benthomisophria has been carried out, with particular emphasis on the skeletomusculature. All misophrioids possess a carapace-like posterior extension of the cephalosome which completely encloses, both dorsally and laterally, the first pedigerous somite which lies beneath but which is not fused to the cephalosome. The presence of this ‘carapace’ in the bathypelagic Benthomisophria is associated with the ability to gorge until virtually all free space within the prosome is occupied by the gut. Another unique feature is the presence, in Benthomisophria, of lateral areas of cone organs on the cephalosome. These organs project from the body surface, are funnel-shaped, and bear an apical sphere of secretion. They are positioned so that the setae of the reflexed second antenna and mandibular palp sweep over them. Functional interpretations are offered. The phylogenetic position of the Misophrioida is also discussed. They exhibit an unusual combination of ancestral, unique (autapomorphic) and convergent character states that makes the identification of a sister-group a difficult task.
