Abstract

Studies of 54 Montreal area lakes and ponds were conducted between 1978 and 1981 to determine the extent to which physical factors, chemistry, and biotic factors affect distribution and size of six calanoid copepods: Diaptomus minutus, D. oregonensis, D. spatulocrenatus, D. birgei, D. leptopus, and Epischura laoustris. Physical and chemical parameters, copepod presence, abundance, and body size were determined on several sampling dates, primarily in 1979. Four of these species close to the same body length are rarely found in the same lake; they appear to separate according to pH, depth, and conductivity. All four of these species are found with predatory E. lacustvis and the small filter-feeding D. minutus. Where D. minutus and D. oregonensis co-occur, there is evidence for character displacement. These facts suggest that patterns of distribution and body size have been in part molded by interspecific competition. Some size patterns, notably a positive correlation between body length and turbidity, can be related to either food supply or to predator avoidance. Control of distribution and body size cannot be ascribed to any single factor.
