Summary

The family Chondracanthidae contains parasites of marine demersal fishes. They are characteristic in having a highly transformed female carrying a much less modified pygmy male. They attach by means of the modified hook-like second antennae. There are 39 species out of ca. 150 chondracanthids, carrying at the base of this pair of appendages an enigmatic structure called accessory antennule, which is merely a small digitiform process tipped with various numbers of setae and/or spines.

To live successfully in the oral and branchial cavities of fish, parasites are required to have a powerful attachment apparatus. The chondracanthid accessory antennule is postulated to be a remnant of the development of such an organ. It is speculated that the Chondracanthidae have originated from some Scambicornus-like sabelliphilids and their modified hook-like second antennae was evolved through (1) consolidation of the first and the second segments (to form the basal piece) and (2) fusion of the claw on the third segment with its segment proper (to form the terminal hook). Thus, the originally reduced and offset terminal (fourth) segment was either lost or retained as an accessory antennule at the base of the powerful terminal hook of the modern chondracanthids.
