Abstract

This conversation with Wael Hallaq starts from discussing the major ideas of his then recently published work on the Moroccan philosopher Abderrahmane Taha, Reforming Modernity: Ethics and the New Human in the Philosophy of Abdurrahman Taha (2019). In this conversation Hallaq recounts his intellectual encounter with Tahaâs work, which he describes as unique and formidable among modern and contemporary Arab philosophy and thought at large. Hallaq compares Tahaâs philosophic project with that of his peer and compatriot al-Jabri and shows how the former is radically critical of modernity through the ethical paradigm he builds as a form of its refutation as well as correction. At the base of this ethical corrective paradigm stands the notion of profound liberty of the human being, a value Hallaq thinks other traditions share, but which Taha has reclaimed and championed from within the Arab-Islamic tradition. Hallaq ultimately argues here that Taha deserves to be read beyond his Moroccan or Arab-Islamic contexts; his philosophic project is a major contribution to human intellect at this stage of modernity, modernityâs predicament, and human history.
