Abstract

Independent Morocco has a very strong multilingual journalistic practice that dates back to the colonial period. Cultural journals in Amazigh, Arabic, and French played a major role in shaping public debates about many crucial issues during the period known as the âYears of Lead,â between Moroccoâs independence in 1956 and the passing of King Hassan II in 1999. This chapter argues that Moroccan cultural journals were spaces in which transnational thought and theory crosspollinated Moroccan thought and established dialogues between global and local producers of knowledge. Moreover, the chapter shows that Moroccan cultural journals struck an important balance between their rootedness in Morocco and their desire to explore the various entanglements of the country in other networks in Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean, among others. Finally, the chapter shows how the Amazigh journals braved political repression to construct and assert Amazigh indigeneity at a time when very few people were aware of Tamazight as a political and cultural issue in Morocco.
