Abstract

This chapter introduces the philosophy of the human person of Mohamed Aziz Lahbabi, a pioneering philosopher in the modern Moroccan educational and political system of the 1950s. First, an outline of the meaning and philosophy of the person as intersubjective is introduced, followed, next, by an explanation of the major sources and influences of the concept of the person in Islam according to Lahbabi, with major reference to the notions of shahÄda or testimony of God, and the notions of freedom, reason, individual and community, and the totality of body and soul in the materialization of a genuine rational and free human person. Third, and finally, some problematics will be raised regarding this concept, such as questioning the place of the figure of the Prophet Muhammad in the formulation of this project, and the concept of âthe human personâ or shakhá¹£ itself and how it can be explored theologically-philosophically in the Islamic tradition. Overall, Lahbabiâs philosophy of the Muslim person reasoning has three implications: a theological implication which contends that there is human freedom with regard to God; an ethical implication which demands that the person follows its conscience in its intersubjective growth and interaction with other persons and the world around it; and a political implication which means that liberties of expression and religion are necessary for a real testimony and self-liberation. These implications are fertile to universal philosophical and theological dialogues.
