Abstract

This chapter introduces the futures studies field of scholarship as presented in the Arab world by the pioneering Moroccan international relations scholar and futurist Mahdi Elmandjra (1933â2014). First, the chapter gives an overview of his intellectual biography and career so as to better understand his thought afterwards. Second, Elmandjraâs analysis of the Arab world, as well his views of reform, are synthetically presented here, based on his prospective thought and understanding of futures studies. Third, the chapter outlines his reading of the global order and his suggestions to reform it for the sake of human liberty, dignity, democratization, and world peace, and against hegemony, mega-imperialism, and the clash of civilizations. The chapter concludes with some critical remarks regarding the limitations of Elmandjraâs ambitious futuristic scenarios and of his proposals for the institutionalization of concrete reforms in society.
