This chapter examines the thought of Abdessalam Yassine (1928–2012), the founder of the Justice and Benevolence movement (al-ʿAdl wa-l-Iḥsān) in Morocco, a movement that has international branches outside Morocco, especially among the Moroccan diaspora in Europe. Yassine was put in a mental asylum and placed under house arrest for writing well-publicized letters to King Hassan II (r. 1961–1999) and later to his son and successor, King Mohammed VI (r. 1999–present). Yassine is a prolific author, and his publications address topics such as democracy, reason, ijtihād and the concept of guardianship (rulership) in Muslim communities. First, the chapter offers a biographical sketch of Yassine’s spiritual and political journey, then it successively synthesizes his views on reason, democracy, ijtihād, and guardianship.
