The modern rediscovery and re-appropriation of Ibn KhaldÅ«nâs work by Arab scholars has largely developed along the following dichotomy. On the one hand, some have described Ibn KhaldÅ«n as an original and atypical thinker for his context and time, and as the only or highest representative of Arab-Islamic thought â thus partly reinforcing the view of many Western scholars who had minimized the role of the tradition to which he belonged. On the other hand, there has been an opposite trend that demotes his originality, by highlighting his complete adherence to the Islamic tradition of historiography and thought. This chapter studies four prominent contemporary Moroccan scholars who have systematically addressed Ibn KhaldÅ«nâs philosophy: Mohammed Aziz Lahbabi (1922â1993), Mohammed Abed al-Jabri (1935â2010), Abdallah Laroui (b. 1933), and Bensalem Himmich (b. 1948). The chapter first overviews how Ibn KhaldÅ«n is revisited in the modern and contemporary Arab world. It then examines how the above-mentioned scholars re-read the same legacy in the Moroccan context, starting with Lahbabi and al-Jabri; the former owing to his contribution to the advancement of the study of Ibn KhaldÅ«n in general, and as one of the founders of the âschool of Rabat,â and the latter owing to the theoretical importance and systematic nature of his critical approach to Arab thought. Laroui, another representative of the school of Rabat, offers an analysis which highlights different characteristics of Ibn KhaldÅ«nâs work compared to the first two authors, by focusing on the subjects of modernity and the State. Finally, Himmich, who mixes academic work and literature, has also written a scientific study and a fictional biography of Ibn KhaldÅ«n. These scholars have made a substantial impact on the Arab intellectual world, whilst also being well-known in the West â Laroui in particular.
