Abstract

This chapter examines the political engagements of the Moroccan Sufi order of QÄdiriyya BÅ«tshÄ«shiyya during the last two decades, in alliance with the monarchy. First, it outlines the not-too-distant past dynamics of the Sufi order, and the emergence of a rival within it, i.e. the Movement of Justice and Excellence. It then ethnographically portrays some public and political engagements of the order during the countryâs socio-political changes of 2011, in the context of so-called Arab Spring. The BÅ«tshÄ«shiyya mobilized and supported the monarchâs reform agenda, and in so doing became a clear engaged Sufi political ally. Third, the chapter builds some comparisons between how religion has been used in Moroccan politics in two sample events: the return of King Mohammed V in 1953, who was dethroned by the French colonial administration, and the mythic/alleged presence of King Mohammed VI in the Casablanca demonstrations in 2011. The chapter ends with contextualizing this alliance between the Sufi brotherhood and the monarchy in the current historical period of internal and regional changes, and the narrative of fight against religious radicalism and containment of political Islam.
