Abstract

Gender has been foundational in the debates that accompanied the construction of contemporary Moroccan thought. This concept has been particularly pivotal in ideological shiftings and reshiftings, often triggered by uncertainty, from the colonial to the post-Uprisings moments. This chapter uses the concept of âthe Middle Groundâ (al-Wasaá¹) as a theoretical framework that contextualizes facts within a historical continuum where womenâs rights and gender issues are salient in directing and redirecting ideological debates in major transitional and uncertainty-bound phases like those of Morocco. The chapter assumes that womenâs rights and gender issues are the historical motors of change in contemporary Morocco (and the larger North Africa) because they are âlocatedâ in Muslim Family Laws and their reform necessitates a transcendence of the socio-cultural and economic realms to the legal and political realms where power and authority reside. This chapter is organized into two main parts: (i) the pre-Uprisings ideological background of the Middle where I first present the gendered history of the conservatives and the modernists (1930sâ1970s), then the gendered history of the secularists and the Islamists (1980sâ2010), and third the post-Uprisings Middle (2011âpresent) as a space of diversity and transformative evolution which is neither exclusively conservative or modernist, nor exclusively secular or Islamist, but diverse, protest-based and pragmatic.
