Abstract

As is well-known, the two Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao retain their specific legal heritage, which are the result of their history, and are currently granted legislative and judicial autonomy by the People’s Republic of China’s central government under the principle of ‘One country, two systems’ enshrined in their respective Basic Laws. In light of the history and specifities of the SARs, the Chapter analyzes the political, cultural and judicial significance of the Chinese Civil Code for the legal systems of Hong Kong and Macao.
