The name Caatinga originates from the Tupi-Guarani language, meaning ‘white forest’. It is an environmental system exclusively found in Brazil, which occupies about 11% of the country (a total of 844,453 km²). It is the principal biome in the Northeast. Soil is an essential component for the maintenance of environmental quality, thus becoming one of the main habitats for the development of micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, algae and viruses) involved in the decomposition of organic matter. The filamentous fungi were identified using morphologic and microscopy characteristics. The isolates were evaluated for their ability to grow in adverse conditions (pH, temperature and salinity), assimilation of carbon and nitrogen, detection enzyme (amylase, protease, lipase, tannase and polyphenol) and the study of the potential for the production of lipids. The results provide substantial evidence of the behavior of the cultures of Rhizopus for obtaining supplies of high commercial value.
