Candida lipolytica has shown an organism suitable for the biosurfactant production and degradation of hydrophobic substrates. Alternative treatments were carried out using C. lipolytica to degradate the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pyrene, derivative from petroleum,using five different culture media. The mixed substrates consisted of glucose and sucrose assoluble carbon sources and babassu oil and pyrene as insoluble sources. The results suggested that biosorption and co-metabolism occurred during the growth of C. lipolytica in substrate interactions in the mixture of the sources. The removal procedures consisted of cultivation in sucrose, glucose and babassu oil substrates, added of 10 mg/l of pyrene during 5 days. The results indicate that C. lipolytica shown ability to pyrene removal by sorption mechanisms In this work, we investigated the abilities of C. lipolytica to co-metabolize the hydrocarbon pyrene at low concentration (10 mg/l).
