The objective of this work was to produce biosurfactants from two Pseudomonas strains cultivated in low-cost substrates aiming for the effective application of these new biosurfactants in the petroleum industry. Pseudomonas cepacia was grown on mineral medium supplemented with 2.0% corn steep liquor and 2.0% of soybean waste frying oil for 144 h at 30 °C and 250 rpm while the uncharacterised Pseudomonas sp. strain was grown on mineral medium supplemented with 3% sugar cane molasses and 3% corn steep liquor for 96 h at 28 °C and 200 rpm. The biosurfactants from P. cepacia and P. sp. were able to reduce the water surface tension from 70 to 28 and 29 mN/m, respectively, while the yields of isolated products were 5.2 and 4.5 g/l. The results in phytotoxicity tests showed that both biosurfactants showed no inhibitory effect on seed germination and elongation of the roots of Brassica oleracea. The biosurfactants showed anionic character. The preliminary chemical composition revealed the presence of lipids, carbohydrates and proteins in its composition.
