The present article summarizes some of our findings over the last five years on the efficacy of a bioremediation tool based on the bacterial strain Pseudomonas sp. ADP for the cleanup of soils contaminated with chlorinated s-triazine herbicides, mostly focusing atrazine, which were presented at BioMicroWorld2013. Under two different scales (open soil bench microcosms, and semifield simulator), and by integrating soil and aquatic ecotoxicity data and chemical analysis, it has been proven the effective and fast decontamination (in <10 days) of a natural soil contaminated with an atrazine herbicidal formulation mimicking different worst-case scenarios. More importantly, experimental evidences suggest that it may contribute to diminish atrazine (and/or its metabolites) mobilization from soils due to leaching and surface runoff and, thus, reduce ecological risk for aquatic compartments. In addition, it was also examined whether the presence of S-metolachlor in soils concomitantly with atrazine could affect the performance of this bioaugmentation bacterium.
