The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) embraces the mission ‘one profession, one vision, one voice’ but at the same time emphasises plural tasks and normative responsibilities including the improvement of animal health and welfare, public health, and environmental protection. Against this background, the question arises as to the extent to which the proposed vision of the FVE does justice to the profession or whether tensions arise due to these multiple normative orientations of the veterinary profession. To shed light on this issue, our contribution seeks to sociologise veterinary ethics by dissecting the intricacies of collective identity within this professional domain. In doing so, we propose a sociological stance on professional ethics that addresses the socio-historical construction of animal categories and their meaning in veterinary practice. This involves a nuanced examination of relationships across three levels: macro, meso and micro level. Turning to the macro level, we focus on the examination of the social construction of animal categories and their historical changes. In relation to the meso level, we focus on the organisation of veterinary medicine that is affected by these historical changes. Finally, the micro level is examined through the lens of collective identity and the professional self-image of veterinarians. Drawing on insights from sociology, history, and veterinary ethics, this paper aims to challenge conventional notions of the existence of a unified veterinary profession and to unravel the intricate interplay between ethics, sociology, and the practice of veterinary medicine.
