The modernisation of Australian agriculture, against the backdrop of becoming an export-dominant country and the global insatiable hunger for more âsustainableâ food production, has resulted in an increasing need for regulation, certification, and compliance. This shift has introduced new responsibilities for farmers. Beyond non-traditional farming activities, farmers must ensure their business is adhering to regulatory requirements and capturing data to feed into certification schemes. This transition has not only added to the workload of farmers but has created a demand for additional labour within the farming business to meet these emerging needs. Research conducted in South Australia has shown that women play a crucial role in meeting these regulatory and compliance needs within farming businesses, contributing significant labour that is often unseen and uncompensated. My research explores how women perceive their role within farming, the impact of their contribution to their farming businesses on daily life, and the challenges they face with balancing farm responsibilities with other activities such as off-farm work. Understanding the perspectives of these women is vital for informing policy and identifying the support mechanisms required. By acknowledging and addressing the unseen labour of women in Australian agriculture, there is an opportunity to create more inclusive and equitable systems that empower the entire farming community.
