New genomic techniques such as CRISPR suggest disruptive changes in the way we produce food, feed, and other biobased products. In this paper we argue that to promote responsible use of genome editing technologies for the common good, it is important to include citizens in the regulatory discussions. Further, we discuss how such an inclusion can be promoted or discouraged. Our starting points are recent examples of experts arguing that it is “unethical not to use genome editing”. We argue that such claims contribute to closing rather than opening for a healthy public discourse. We further support the continued need for applying the precautionary principle, also for new genome-editing techniques, and that this requires public participation. Genome editing is a tool that can be used in various contexts and under different conditions, and responsible development and use of genome editing should emphasize the different uses and contexts and distinguish more clearly what the benefits, risk, and ethical aspects are and that this can be dependent on purpose, type of organism, and the system the edited organism are to be used in. The use, for example, of genome editing in animals raise other aspects than the use in plants as question related to animal welfare.
