In this paper we will argue that what Bernard E. Rollin describes as a gestalt shift and what K.E. Logstrup calls âthe immediate experienceâ are two converging epistemological approaches that enables ethical awareness. This paper thus serves as a prequel to an earlier paper (Gjerris and Harfeld, 2019), where we developed the idea that the ethical perspective of K.E. Logstrup can provide fruitful insights in an animal ethics context. Together the two papers point to a possible Rollian gestalt shift in the reception of Logstrup. Further, this approach not only makes Logstrupâs thinking relevant in an animal ethics context even though Logstrup himself never mentioned this as an opportunity, but also, based on the idea of sympathetic observations in Rollin, makes it possible to connect Logstrupâs thoughts of âthe silent demandâ and the responsibility of the individual with the virtue ethics strand within contemporary animal ethics.
