Abstract

Le manuscrit BRR 3655 de la BibliothÃ¨que Royale de Rabat a dÃ©jÃ suscitÃ© lâintÃ©rÃªt des chercheurs, en particulier de Marianne Barrucand. La particularitÃ© de cette copie est de mÃ©langer les personnages (hommes et femmes) portant des costumes et des coiffes Â« mongols Â» avec dâautres dont le costume et les traits dÃ©rivent des styles en cours Ã Bagdad dans la premiÃ¨re moitiÃ© du XIII^e siÃ¨cle. Le but de cette contribution est dâabord dâanalyser les composantes des costumes mongols qui apparaissent dans ces illustrations, en les comparant notamment Ã dâautres images issues de lâIran il-khanide. De fait, les costumes mongols apparaissent bien plus souvent dans les illustrations des ouvrages historiques que dans des fictions. On peut dÃ¨s lors sâinterroger sur la portÃ©e de ce choix illustratif, par exemple comme vecteur dâune charge morale ou affective, positive ou nÃ©gative, selon le type iconographique. Il dÃ©coule enfin de cette caractÃ©risation un questionnement quant Ã la signification de ce qui se prÃ©sente comme des Â« marqueurs ethnoculturels Â» et leurs Ã©ventuelles dÃ©clinaisons, Â« exotique Â» ou idÃ©ologique.

Abstract

The BRR 3655 manuscript of the Royal Library of Rabat has already attracted the attention of researchers, especially Marianne Barrucand. The peculiarity of this copy is that it mixes characters (men and women) wearing Mongolian costumes and headdresses with others whose costumes and features derive from the styles in use in Baghdad in the first half of the 13th century. The purpose of this contribution is first to analyze the components of the Mongol costumes that appear in these illustrations, comparing them to other images from Ilkhanid Iran. Mongolian costumes tend to appear much more often in the illustrations of historical works than in fiction. One can therefore wonder about the scope of this illustrative choice, for example as the vector of a moral or emotional charge, positive or negative, according to the iconographic type. Finally, this characterization leads to questions as to the meaning of what is presented as âethnocultural markersâ and their possible variations, be they âexoticâ or ideological.
