Abstract

This chapter adopts the data on the willingness to bear children and the childbearing plan in the Chinese General Social Survey 2015 and compares relevant survey results in 2011 to analyze the willingness to bear children and the childbearing plan of the groups of childbearing age in China. According to relevant research, at present, the complete fertility level of the groups of childbearing age in China is lower than the replacement level, and with a gradual decrease in age, the complete average number of children to whom the groups of childbearing age give birth will be smaller than 1.7. The ideal number of children to whom the groups of childbearing age give birth is smaller than 2; the willingness to bear children decreases with declining age. The urban-rural gap in the level of willingness to bear children is stable, but the gap narrows along with declining age; the willingness to bear children of the low-income groups is relatively high. For regional differences, the level of willingness to bear children in the northeastern region is apparently lower than that in other regions, and the average ideal number of children is only 1.76. Regarding the childbearing plan of the groups of childbearing age, there is a very low possibility that the 40 and older age groups of childbearing age give birth to the second child. The 40 and older age groups of childbearing age who certainly refrain from giving birth to the next child account for nearly 88%. The groups of childbearing age with one child who plan to have the second child within five years account for not more than 70%.
