The Chinese Mainland has a coherent system for teacher professional development. Future teachers have strong subject matter preparation. Once teachers are hired, they enter a system of continuous professional development in schools and are immersed in observation of experienced teachers’ classroom instruction (Stewart, 2006). A position promotion system provides incentives for teachers to develop their profession. This chapter describes the main mechanisms of professional development in the Chinese Mainland. A variety of programs, including apprenticeship practice, different levels of teaching research activities, advancing education degree programs, and innovative training programs pertaining to implementing new curricula, have been employed to develop teachers’ expertise. The possible roles of different professional development programs to help novice teachers familiarize teaching routines, develop basic teaching skill, and further help them to become qualified and expert teachers are discussed in detail. As found from a small survey on the perceived effectiveness of the programs, the case studybased theoretical analysis, together with lesson demonstration and expert’s comments, and school/district-based teaching research activities led by experts, focusing on developing exemplary lessons were more effective. Finally, we argue that the systematic professional development approaches associated with a culturally-valued ranking system might provide a supportive and effective way to enhance practicing teachers’ expertise growth.
