In Japan the national standards for education in schools are prescribed in the Courses of Study issued by the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports, Culture and Technology. The Courses of Study for school mathematics provide the basic framework for curricula: the overall objectives and the objectives and contents of teaching at each grade in elementary, lower secondary and upper secondary school. In this chapter one aspect of the mathematics education in Japan is described in terms of its curriculum. We begin with the educational framework and a historical survey of mathematics education in Japan. We then describe in detail school hours and credits, objectives and contents for mathematics in elementary, lower secondary and upper secondary school. Finally, we discuss on some issues impacting on mathematics education in Japan. The chapter concludes with a need to gather international wisdom and work collaboratively in developing the mathematics curriculum in order to improve the quality of teaching and learning of mathematics in school.
