In general, primary school teachers in Singapore are generalists, teaching three main subjects including Mathematics. As they are not expected to be specialist Mathematics teachers, the Mathematics requirements for employment are very basic. The preparation of beginning teachers for Singapore’s primary schools is undertaken solely by one institution in Singapore, the National Institute of Education (NIE). This chapter describes and compares the mathematical components in the three primary school teacher preparation programmes at the NIE. While the pedagogy components of the three programmes are largely similar, the programmes include different subject knowledge components for focusing on a deeper understanding of mathematics concepts relevant to what will be taught at primary school level. The chapter will explain the rationale for this Mathematics subject knowledge component, describe its contents and discuss some issues concerning its delivery and acceptance.
