Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major cause of hospital-associated infections worldwide. Probiotic lactobacilli have the potential to produce antimicrobial substances that inhibit and control pathogenic bacteria. Î²-lactams and tetracycline sensitivity of MRSA 33591 was tested in the presence of the supernatant of Lactobacillus plantarum and organic acids using a disc diffusion method. With 0.4 ml L. plantarum supernatant zones of inhibition were: cefotaxime (39.5 Â± 0.5 mm), ampicillin (22.16 Â± 0.28 mm), methicillin 20 Î¼g (24.3 Â± 0.76 mm) and tetracycline (13 Â± 0.5 mm). Compared with complete resistance in the control. The zone of inhibition (38.5 Â± 0.5 mm) in the presence of 1.5% acetic acid (pH 4) and 20 Î¼g/ml methicillin was significantly greater than the control (0.00 mm). The results demonstrate that methicillin sensitivity can be restored to MRSA by exposure to L. plantarum culture fluid and/or organic acids.
