In fungi, ligninolytic enzymes, laccases and manganese peroxidase, are widely distributed in Ascomycetes, Deutromycetes and Basidiomycete. This paper focuses on laccase, manganese proxidase and lignin peroxidase production by Penicillium sp. strains isolated from Caatinga soil. The results revealed that all tested strains were able to express the ligninolytic enzymes activity. Specific (U/mg protein) and total (U/l) were determined. Variations related to enzyme activity were also determined among the strains. Manganese peroxidase was the enzyme with lowest activity, while laccase activity was high in all strains. The best producers were P3 for laccase (37.32 U/mg protein), P1 for lignin peroxidase (19.58 U/mg protein) and P2 for manganese peroxidase (6.16 U/mg/ protein). The results represent the potential of Penicillium isolated from Caatinga soil is promising ligninolytic enzymes for biotechnological and industrial purposes.
