In patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, peritonitis has been proved to be a well-known mortality factor. This is the first ever retrospective analysis done in India; on a total of 127 End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients who entered our chronic peritoneal dialysis (CPD) programme from February 2005- March 2013. A total of 100 peritonitis episodes occurred in 67 patients who entered the CPD programme. Twenty three patients (M8, F15) died during episodes of peritonitis (18.11%). Thirty nine of these peritonitis episodes were culture negative. The most common organism isolated were Escherichia coli (7), Mycobacterium tuberculosis (5) and Candida species (5). Various factors like diabetes mellitus (15), hypertension (13), cardiovascular disease (5) and advanced age predisposed to mortality in our cohort.
