Resistance to imipenem, meropenem and doripenem was evaluated among a total of 186 Pseudomonas aeruginos isolates from humans. Twenty-five isolates (13.4%) were resistant to at least one of the carbapenems tested. The following resistance mechanisms were evaluated: mutations on OprD porin, presence of metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs) and extended-spectrum-beta-lactamases (ESBLs), overproduction of AmpC cephalosporinase and role of RND efflux pumps. Production of MBLs and ESBLs was not detected, and RND pumps does not appear to be implied in carbapenem-resistance. Our results suggest that resistance to imipenem, meropenem and doripenem in the isolates analysed is mediated by porin changes, plus an enzyme of AmpC type.
